Haydn the Innovator: a New Approach to the String Quartets
ed. David Young
with a preface by H.C. Robbins Landon
A collection of essays (arising from the Royal Northern College of Music's HaydnFest in January 1999) in which eminent musicologists look at the development of each movement of the classical string quartet in Haydn's hands, and the central chapters are placed in a larger context by an overview and a performer's view of the practicalities of performance.
The text is illustrated by copious musical examples, and the book is accompanied by a 70-minute CD containing 23 examples, mainly in the form of complete movements, which are continuously numbered throughout the text.
