Versopolls began in 2014, initially as a European poetry platform, funded by the European Commission’s Creative Europe Programme (quoted from McGuinness’ introduction). It supported poetry festivals, poets and translators. Europe in Poems is an anthology in celebration of the intercultural and cross language collaborations thus facilitated. The book offers the work of some 60 poets, presented in an English translation, followed by the text of the original. I met translations of poets whose work I already knew such as the Welsh poet Mererid Hopwood, translated by Tim ap Hywel; poets with whose work I had only a very limited familiarity like the Italian Franca Mancinelli (translated by John Taylor) and poets who were entirely new to me, such as Barbara Klicka from Poland, translated by my old friend David Malcolm. The whole delightful anthology fully validates the concept of a ‘poetic community’. In his introduction Patrick McGuinness drily observes that By some sad irony the British poets in this anthology began as European poets and now, Post Brexit, no longer are. Minority languages are, as they should be, well represented in Europe in Poems.
