Review: The Page and the Fire, ed. Peter Oram
Glyn Pursglove, 'Poetry Comment' Acumen 60, January 2008
A fascinating book from Arc..., is the work of Peter Oram, as editor and translator. [...] brings together a complex web of poems from (mostly) the first fifty years of the twentieth century in which Russian poets write of and to one another. Altogether there are forty-seven poems here, all of them of interest and all printed with the original Russian on the facing page. I can't comment on the accuracy of Peter Oram's translations, though I can say that most of them read well and plausibly, and the best of them are quite striking. This was an excellent idea for a book and the idea has been well carried out, the result making stimulating reading and offering an attractively original look at a great phase in the history of poetry.
