Review: The Page and the Fire, ed. Peter Oram
PBS Bulletin, issue 215, Winter 2007
This anthology is a rare example of poetry as a collaborative art: in it, Russian poets write about other Russian poets. The usual profound solitude of the poet was, Oram explains, shattered after the death of Symbolism when turbulent political times led to an extraordinary period in Russian writing, as poets vied for linguistic honesty. This book captures and exemplifies that spirit when artistic rivalry was forgotten and poetry became instead a mutual nurturing of common bonds.
