Brother Anthony of Taizé France

BROTHER ANTHONY OF TAIZÉ was born in 1942 in England. He
completed his studies in Medieval & Modern Languages at Queen’s
College in the University of Oxford, and holds M.A and M.Litt.
degrees. He became a member of the Community of Taizé (France)
in 1969. Since 1980, he has been living in Korea. He taught English
Literature at Sogang University, Seoul for over twenty years. He is
now an Emeritus Professor in the English Department of Sogang
University. Since 2010 he has also been a Chair-Professor in the
International Creative Writing Center at Dankook University, Seoul.

He has published some 50 volumes of English translations of
modern Korean literature, including the novels The Poet and Son of
Man by Yi Mun-Yol and poetic works by Ko Un, So Chong-Ju, Ku
Sang, Lee Si-Young, Kim Seung-Hee, Kim Sa-In and others. He was
awarded the Korean Government’s Order of Cultural Merit (Jade
Crown) in 2008. He took Korean citizenship in 1994 and An Seon-jae
is his legal Korean name. Since the start of 2011 he has been President
of the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch. In December 2015 he was
awarded an honorary MBE by Queen Elizabeth.
