Lucija Stupica Slovenia
Ever since the publication of her first book of poems, Cello in the Sun (2000), Slovenian poet Lucija Stupica has been recognized as one of the leading poetic voices of her generation. Greeted with immediate critical and popular acclaim and winning her both the Golden Bird Award for outstanding artistic achievement and the award for the Best debut book of the year, Cello in the Sun has left a significant mark on the Slovenian poetry of the new millennium.
Often combining scenes from everyday life with an unmistakable sense of wonderment, Stupica’s poetry is distinguished by an ever-present notion that everything can become a poem. The nocturnal meeting with a toad on the small island of Oaxen in the Stockholm archipelago; the buzzing of a beetle while on the phone with a friend; a girl’s changing gaze in the early studies for a painting by artist Ivana Kobilica, all unveil Stupica’s attentive vision as well as her deeply rooted connectedness to the world around us.
Awarded both in her native Slovenia and abroad, Lucija Stupica resides now in Stockholm, Sweden. She is first time presented in English with her fourth poetry collection Vanishing Points (2019), nominated for the two most important Slovene poetry prizes and already published in Spanish, Swedish and Croatian. Her fifth book of poems, Magnolia. Her Story came out in Slovenia in 2024. In recent years, she has translated poetry and prose from Swedish and English.
