Will Stone, born 1966, is a poet, essayist and literary translator who divides his time between Suffolk, North Devon and the European continent. His first poetry collection Glaciation (Salt, 2007), won the international Glen Dimplex Award for poetry in 2008. A second collection Drawing in Ash was published by Salt in May 2011. Shearsman Books republished the two Salt collections in new editions in August 2015 and published a third collection The Sleepwalkers in April 2016 to critical acclaim.
Will’s published translations include Les Chimères by Gérard de Nerval (Menard, 1999), To The Silenced – Selected Poems of Georg Trakl (Arc Publications, 2005) and Poems by Emile Verhaeren (Arc Publications, 2013). Journeys, a first English translation of Stefan Zweig’s European travel essays, was published by Hesperus Press in 2010. This was followed by Rilke in Paris by Maurice Betz (Hesperus, 2012) which also included a translation of Rilke’s Notes on the Melody of Things. Hesperus published two more translations, Nietzsche by Stefan Zweig (2013) and On the End of the World by Joseph Roth (2013), collecting hitherto unknown essays from his Parisian exile during the 1930s. Pushkin Press published a first English translation of Montaigne by Stefan Zweig (2015) and then Messages from a Lost World (2016), Zweig’s essays and speeches from the 1930s. Pushkin will publish a further collection of Zweig’s essay portraits on his contemporaries as Encounters and Destinies – A Farewell to Europe in 2017. Hesperus Press will publish a translation of Friedrich Hölderlin – Life, Poetry and Madness by Wilhelm Waiblinger also in 2017. A Collected Poems of Georg Trakl will appear from Seagull Books in spring 2018.
Will is currently writing a prose work on the more overlooked elements of the cultural history and landscape of Belgium. He also plans to write the first monograph in English on the overlooked Belgian painter Léon Spilliaert. Further translation projects include a first English translation of Poems to Night by Rilke. Will contributes essays and reviews of art and literature to, amongst others, The TLS, The London Magazine, Poetry Review, Apollo Magazine, The Burlington Magazine and The White Review.
