YMF Showcase, November 2003
Kate Dixon was born and grew up in Lichfield, where she took an eclectic approach to a music education by performing on as many different instruments and in as many different scenarios as possible - solo flute, big band saxophone, string ensembles, orchestral clarinet and finally, solo piano.
In 1998 Kate entered the Royal Northern College of Music to study piano with Sally-Ann Macleod, later studying with Mark Ray and Peter Lawson. It was at the RNCM that she developed a particular interest in contempory music, and gained experience of working with a variety of composers. She also studied prepared piano, piano with tape, and extended piano techniques.
Kate graduated with a first class BMus degree from the RNCM last year and now teaches in Manchester, performing as a pianist in a variety of guises. Her most recent performances include improvising Hip Hop Pictures at an Exhibition to video for the Piano 2003 festival and a recital with cellist Douglas Badger in Edinburgh.
