YMF 2005
THE EVES STRING QUARTET was formed in September 2001 at the Royal Northern College of Music, when the founder members - Rebecca Eves and Jenny Dear (violins), Lisa Dowdall (viola) and Jeremias Sanz (cello) - were in their first year of undergraduate study. They study with Louise Lansdown and Dr Christopher Rowland at the RNCM, and have also received coaching from Michael Bochmann of the Bochmann String Quartet and with members of the Endellion, Wiham, Chilingirian and Delmé Quartets.
The quartet has performed in numerous venues and festivals throughout the United Kingdom, including concerts on the Isle of Wight, and in Leeds, Cheltenham, Manchester and the Lake District. The quartet has also performed in Aldeburgh as part of the Pro Corda Musical Encounters course. In summer 2003, the quartet received a bursary to study on the Lake District Summer Music Festival summer school. In February 2004 they travelled to Cape Town, South Africa, where they led workshops on the history of the string quartet in various schools and gave concerts across the area, performing to sell-out audiences.
Within the RNCM, the quartet has participated in several chamber music competitions including the Nossek Chamber Music Prize, the Hirsch Prize for the playing of Beethoven and the Terence Weil Prize for Strings, for which they were highly commended in Spring 2002. In January 2004 they performed to great acclaim in the RNCM's prestigious QuartetFest, and earlier this year performed Schumann's First Quartet in the RNCM Schumann and Brahms Festival. In July 2004 the Eves Quartet was awarded the RNCM Musicales Prize for Chamber Music.
