The Schubert Ensemble of London - winner of the 1998 Royal Philharmonic Society Award for best chamber group - has established an international reputation as Britain's leading exponent of chamber music for piano and strings. Alongside a busy schedule performing in the world's main concert halls, the Ensemble has built a strong reputation for innovative and developmental work, particularly in the fields of education and new music.
With over twenty-five commissions to its credit, the Ensemble has also created a ground-breaking national project, Chamber Music 2000, commissioning sixty short pieces from leading living composers suitable for young and amateur musicians to play. In addition it has set up three residencies in the South West of England, building new audiences for chamber music through outreach, education and concert work.
Last year the Ensemble gave over fifty concerts including tours to Spain, The Netherlands and Canada, and performances at the Spitalfields, Warwick and Leamington, Cheltenham and Interlaken (Switzerland) festivals.
The Ensemble began 2003 with a tour of the United States, and later this year will be performing at, among others, the Newbury Spring Festival, the City of London Festival and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. A week after their performance in Halifax, they will be giving their Twentieth Anniversary Concert at the Wigmore Hall.
As well as broadcasting regularly, the Ensemble has recorded a dozen CDs for various labels including Hyperion and ASV of works by Schubert, Schumann, Hummel, Dohnanyi, Judith Weir, Fauré, Korngold, Brahms and Mendelssohn.
