HELEN THATCHER (cello) is a founder member of the acclaimed Sorrel Quartet, currently Quartet in Residence at Cardiff University. The Quartet tours worldwide, appears regularly on BBC Radio 3 and records exclusively for the Chandos label.

Helen leads a busy solo and chamber music career. She has performed all the standard cello concertos as well as exploring contemporary works. In the North, she has played concertos with the Northern Chamber Orchestra, appeared at the International Cello Festival in Manchester playing Schnittke's Concerto and at a Royal Gala concert playing Tippett's Triple Concerto. She performed the Brown concerto in Leeds having worked with the composer.

Helen has given recitals in Switzerland, the USA and around the UK. Premieres include a solo piece written for her by John Stringer which she performed at the British Music Information Centre, London. John Pickard also wrote a piece for her and Darius Battiwalla with whom Helen as played as a duo since 1988. Helen has also played with the Lindsay Quartet in performances, around the country, of the Schubert Quintet and the Brahms Sextets.

Helen is a graduate of the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music.
