THE SNÍTIL QUARTET was formed by students of the Jan Neruda College in 1998 and is named after a member of the legendary Vlach Quartet, Professor Václav Snítil, who has coached the Quartet from the beginning. Its members are now all students at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
In only its second year, the Quartet won the prize for the Best Czech Ensemble in the 1999 Prague International Radio Competition and since then has gone on to win further awards, including the special prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work (Viktor Kalabis' Second Quartet as featured in tonight's programme) in the 2003 Beethoven International Competition.
The Quartet has performed extensively in its native Czech Republic and abroad in Switzerland, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands, and has participated in courses taught by members of the Amadeus Quartet, the Bartok Quartet, the Haagen Quartet and the Accorda Quartet.
Members of the Quartet are outstanding performers in their own right, and prize-winners in many international competitions.
